I think they lack impact, probably because the lack of reaction enemies react to them.
I personally don't like the way these weapons play out that much. So far in the first level, the game gave me four weapons: the classic wrench, a pistol, some starbeam thingy and a rifle beam thing. There are of course locked doors, and so you'd need to find access key cards in order to access them.
The areas, while having tight corridors, is actually super open due to the immense number of rooms in the first level. The first level of this game is already more "immersive-sim" than the whole BioShock series combined. I was able to play this game 40 fps on my crappy laptop, which made me super happy. I especially like the fact that the devs are able to make the game look so good when the texture quality is fairly low. The Citadel is dark and spooky, and instantly gives off some mysterious and horror vibes. Right off the bat, I got to say the atmosphere is super well done.
